Happy Birthday J, I too got the Sigma 17-70 for my Birthday, only difference I was celebrating my 70th, so hope these tired ol'eyes keep going for a while longer. Looking at the threads here, I must be one of the oldest on the forum.

I will be 72 February 2010. In Turkey I am getting ready for my sixth exhibition on my birthday. My first one was in 1988 (Pentax LX) I will be visiting London this week. Planning to buy Pentax 100 mm. macro 2.8.
Hopefully I will have some macro shots in the exhibition.

Back from a weekend away now and the Sigma 17-70 was used extensively (around Canterbury). Really noticed the difference in sharpness to the kit lens and also the overall performance inside the cathedral which has a lot of dim and variable lighting.
In response to Womble's comment on the polariser - I'd be interested to know what people's thoughts are on polarisers for wide angle (or for that matter, extreme telephoto). If it will be of limited use then I will stick with the 72mm. If I were to go with the 77mm I also think I would have trouble attaching the lens hood to the 17-70. It may be possible to attach the hood and then screw in the filter but I guess it would be fiddley. If it comes to a straight choice between polariser or lens hood then what seems best?

Hmm, just under half my age, thanks for making me feel reeelly reeelly old!
Concur with womble, I have used a polariser on the excellent Sigma 10-20 with very mixed results. I wouldn't bother.

Must admit that I do use a 77mm Hoya Pro 1 polariser quite a bit with my DA* 16-50 and I don't seem to have any issues at 16 or 50 mm.
