Having never submitted an image for publication, I’m curious as to what format you would supply to the publisher, surely not the RAW image, I’m guessing it would be Tiff or a 100% jpg format. If this is the case an 8MP jpg would have to have been interpolated from the converted RAW file and a Tiff would have to be downsized.
If this is the case surely a simple hack of the exif would be enough to fool anybody, or am I being to simplistic?

Brian,
They don't check the EXIF, as far as I'm aware. Alamy, for instance, want high quality TIFF images. Exactly how you get them, they don't care (so if you have a high quality image from a 1Mp camera - they don't mind). Of course, they'll accept high quality scans as well (for those on film). As always, it's the image that counts, not how you got there
You can choose to rip out the EXIF data... or better still replace it with the keyword information (e.g. with Adobe Bridge or CS2).
(If you go for bureau stuff, just watch the small print of the license.)

Dont believe ALL this digi stuff. I was fairly recently asked by major publisher, Hodder & Stoughton, to take snaps for a book. They insisted that they were large to medium format. Given the brief, 35mm or digital was the way to go. I decided that if push came to shove, I would shoot on 35 and have larger internegs made. Eventually the editor agreed with me and said 'Go ahead and shoot on 33 RPM' - you cant make stuff like this up!

Can't remember saying that i was feeling discriminated. However, from the recent Zzzz seminar, I'll leave you this story. If the poster Simon says he feels discriminated against by the industry because agencys reject his equipment then let him go buy more equipment
Two pictures were presented in a seminar, one of a Vauxhall and the other of a Audi. The members were asked which car did they prefer. The answer was Audi.
The members were told of the performance of both cars, which were the same and then asked again which did they prefer. Audi was still the answer.
The members were then told of the specs, which again was the same. The members still preferred the Audi.
The members were then told of the price, which the Audi cost £8000 more. However, the members still preferred the Audi.
Do you know the moral of the story?

Didn't I say that Pentax DSLRs did not meet my requirements. Didn't I say that I had trouble getting the D and DS from general Sale. However, I got some stupid replies (not from you personally) like getting a Pentax from Germany. Sorry! No camera no sale. Matt is quite correct. The Nikon D70, D100 and D50 all have 6.1Mp, and use the same sensor as the *ist D, DS(2), DL(2). It's the (rather pricey) Nikon D200 that has 10.2 Mp, and presumably the same sensor as the eagerly awaited 10.2 Mp Pentax DSLR will have.MattMatic wrote:

It's a fact, though, that a number of stock agencies now say that they require pictures from an 8Mp SLR, so if you want to work for them your choice is made for you.
As has been mentioned above, raw megapixel count is a rather crude measure of image quality, particularly given the different technology used in different sensors, but even if it was a perfect yardstick there would still be very little difference in quality between a 6Mp and an 8Mp image. For the same print resolution, the 8Mp image would only be 15% wider/taller.

Indeed the D100 does have 6mp and not the 10.2 as I claimed, so my mistake there. Do you not think it's a shame that Pentax users have to wait until October for a 10.2mp? I guess what agencies are after is peak quality, and they know they can get it

Simonsteph,
I still don't know why you posted here. You have said nothing remotely new, relevant or interesting to members of a Pentax forum.
You appear not even to know that images can be upsampled from 6MP to whatever size you like (within reason).
You are very coy about the camera you have actually bought, as though anyone here cares a damn.
Basically, you are a troll, and I invite you to go off and infest the forums of whichever make you have chosen. It's somebody else's turn to be bored.
Goodbye.

Hi..
Boys...calm down, please, this thread looks like something on photo.net with the C & N boys at war again...the first post on this thread was actually a totally reasonable and fair one, seemingly posted by a Pentax user just asking effectively why in his opinion, has Pentax seemingly left a lot of the market to other camera makers...it just got out of hand... the original Q was well worth investigating..
Cheers Steve.

Steve,
With respect, this topic has been debated to death in every camera forum. Pentax fell behind when they were forced to abandon their first DSLR. By the autumn they will be up to speed.
This guy was just telling us how clever he thinks he is.

Ok, this is beginning to get out of hand...
And I'm getting bored too
Now, if anyone had bothered to do any research you'll find this (which is what I was saying all along):
Regarding the pixel count issue - it's down to physics. The sensors are ALL (with the exception, as I said, of the Foveon sensor found only in Sigma DSLRs) monochrome. If they say they have 6Mp, they capture 6 million grey values. How do they get the colour? They put a micro filter over the CCD so that each pixel records red OR green OR blue (they can't do all three at once). Consequently, whatever pixel count the sensor has, one half are dedicated to green, one quarter to blue, and one quarter to red. To get a FULL colour image you HAVE to interpolate (i.e. guess) the missing pixels, because you need equal quantities of each colour (so that each pixel has red, blue, and green).
Now, back to the original question - yes, maybe Pentax are a lagging a bit behind in the pro market. Granted. The AF is slower than other offerings. Granted.
But neither point prevents Pentax DSLRs being used for professional work.
And, like the original *ist-D, I think it's worth the wait (I very nearly switched brands, but hung in there and personally am pleased I did.)
As I've been saying all along - if you want to switch to another brand, that's fine. I've seen brilliant photos on pretty well every make of DSLR there is. I've also seen pretty terrible ones on all of them as well. It's primarily down to the photographer.
Now I don't mind what camera you use (I comment and appreciate many images on ephotozine), but this forum is here primarily to help Pentax users. So let's keep it that way, shall we?

Note for images from digital cameras - We strongly recommend that images are captured on a digital camera capable of producing files of 17MB and upwards (6 megapixels). Please then interpolate the images to a minimum of 48MB using professional upsizing software. We recommend Genuine Fractals™, although other professional upsizing software is equally acceptable, including Abobe Photoshop versions 7 and CS/CS2 (if the bicubic option is used).
Like I said, 6Mp is not really a problem. You can claim that it is, and that's your perogative. If you stop and think about for it more than a millisecond, you'll remember that professional DSLRs weren't always 8Mp+. Even 1Mp DSLRs were used for professional purposes. http://www.alamy.com/contributors/stock-photography-technical-criteria.asp

I just hope that Pentax doesn't leave the photograph market. Their cameras have been unique and well constructed. My choice of camera hasn't been easy, I had to be careful with the choice of lens because as stated earier, not by me, not all lenses work with my camera. I already knew that.
I'm off to shot some B&W, with film of course. I've suddenly went off digital for some reason, thanx MattMatic
