Giggster acquires ephotozine.com

Any thoughts on how this might affect PentaxUser.

Hi, not at all. Pentax User still remains under the Magezine Publishing portfolio as a separate entity and will continue to run as normal. In fact, we may now have time to put extra resource into it to help improve and grow the site

Hi Tracey, you certainly are a new one on me, for this site
Maybe a small suggestion or two possibly if allowable , from not just myself but from some other regulars to this site also.
Maybe a bump up in the downsizing to 1 MB files only for display of a Photograph.
Many people join the site on a regular basis with enthusiasm but fail to follow up with Photos or conversation, it is a regular occurrence on here sadly but some also remain, encouragement is what to aim.
Also a few prizes in competitions throughout the year, nothing extravagant needs to be on offer but just the thrill for someone to win and hopefully to raise the bar for casual members.
It is a Pentax User forum but anyone that uses Pentax Glass(lenses) even if on a different camera body should also be welcomed wholeheartedly

I must have missed an instalment somewhere. I thought to display images on here they had to be taken using a Pentax derived body. Or have i got it wrong again

We have all been quoting "Pentax camera or accepted clones" on the competition pages for a very long time. Not "Pentax lenses". If we let any old camera in we would end up with a very bumpy playing field. That said, we do allow all sorts of lenses on our Pentax bodies. You only have to look at the contributors on any of the named camera sites. It quickly becomes clear that each has developed into a community with a core group surrounded by occasional supporters and crowds of lurkers. If you remove the cohesive factor (one's Pentax, Canon, Nikon etc.) there will be nothing special about any of these groups.

Have a look at the Giggster website link. What a production renter is should be obvious.

Now look at the bottom right of the Giggster home page. In small print there is a column headed Guides. Click on Photography. Once you've got over your amazment that 22 light leaks and 220 bokeh overlays are being given away free, look at the links just below the page heading - Retouching; Photography; Tools; Basics; Gear. Click on Gear. Along with 'How to clean a camera lens' and 'Prime vs Zoom lens for photography' there are a couple of camera comparisons: 'Canon EOS R vs RP' and 'Nikon Z7 vs Canon EOS R'.

It seems to me that ePHOTOzine and Pentax User dangle somewhere from the lower levels of that bottom right hand corner of the home page. Not exactly core to the business. However, if people really do hire venues for photo shoots and don't have a photographer (maybe themselves) who knows their stuff** then perhaps this is a potential growth area. And perhaps there will one day be a fair and unbiassed comparison between Pentax and other systems on the Gear page.

** And let's not forget that everyone has to start somewhere. If someone has got brilliant creative ideas but doesn't know how to use a camera to good effect, then giving them a helping hand might well encourage them to pay hard cash by becoming a 'production renter'.

It's a different world... .
