Generally struggle with 'Street'...

I've always struggled with Street-Photography but its something I've kept trying at; even though my output has been consistently poor - Think it's a conbination of nervousness pointing a big honking SLR at people I don't know and general impatience on my part amoung other things... So when I saw a 'Street-Photography-Workshop' advertised at one of the city's galleries I jumped on it...
Although not (or indeed anywhere near) to the standard of Cartier-Bresson or even Eric Kim; I am pretty happy with a set of six pictures taken on Saturday...

I am no expert on street photography or anything else for that matter but they look fine to me David

Prefer to see them posted at a decent size though. the forum allows upto 800wide

I thought 6 large images would annoy folk so went small... Won't happen again!

The last one isn't sharp (which obviously annoys me) but I kinda liked his 'strut'... Oh... And his hat!

Thanks for the kind words everyone... These are the best results I've ever had in this genre... If there is a group in your area running workshops like the one I went to on Saturday I'd deffo recommend... There were about 35 of us out in Bradford in small groups; went out 3 times with different group leaders and then back to the gallery for discussion inbetween... Really fun day...

I had a look at your images, they are not too bad, in fact I also took a look at your flickr page and found there are some interesting street photo there which you didn;t post on this forum.

I am not any professional to street photography. but let me try to point out a few tips for you.

I like your first image but I guess if you can shoot a little wider would be better, so that the whole person and the bike are in the frame,

the 2nd photo is very good, well done.

the 3rd one is ok, but is just the background is not the most interesting one.

the 4th one, is boring, if you go to the side of that person and compose it just the the 3rd photo would do it, I assume it is a long high street where you took this photo, in this case you will have a background with lots of depth and your shot will become a lot more interesting.

the 5th shot, I love it, is nice that you have the main subject enjoying her ice cream and also there is a person walking towards the opposite direction as a background, nicely composed and you see what depth of a photo can make a different with this shot.

the last shot of the set is awful, maybe because the poundworld sign, it is too modern to be in a B&W photograph and poundworld has to be blue in my mind.

I'll try a sid view of that bench when I get a chance... It's doublebacked (seat on both sides) so could be good if there's somebody else sat on the other side...

The photo of the guy sitting on the steps and using his mobile phone is the best for me. It tells a story of modern urban life and captures that illusive 'decisive moment' identified by HCB. The man sitting on the seat surrounded by bags also suggests a story line - that of a bored and put upon married man waiting patiently for his wife. Some of the other shots are technically fine but seem to be lacking a story line. The best street photographs involve humour, tension or emotional content or a striking juxtaposition. Unlike several of the other commentators I find the girl with the ice cream the least interesting.
These are all in black and white and that's ok. But
there seems to be a common myth that street photography should always be in mono. Try it in colour as well Dave. Sometimes the colour becomes part of the story.

personally I judge each photo on it's own merits whether it should be B&W or Colour. Often I make a version of both.
