Gels

Does anyone have any advice on which gels to get. I have the Pentax 540 & 360.

What are you planiing to do with them?

At the moment just some basic colour correction for when using flash with tungsten and such. I may want to get more creative later but am really after knowing the best ones to get and how to attach them to the flashgun. I would rather steer away from velcro on the flashgun so any advice of other methods would be appreciated.

Simplest thing is to get some off-cuts of film/tv lighting gels if you can. Are there any film or theatre lighting hire companies nearby? The sizes you would need would normally go in the bin and a full roll is horribly expensive. Ask and you will receive.

Full CTO (Colour temperature orange) will correct flash to tungsten but you might find it a bit too much so I would use 1/2 CTO (two layers would give full CTO if you need to) to begin with.

I'd hold it on with a rubber band, it'll look seriously professional in that 'I know what I'm doing and don't care' sort of way. When I'm converting in the opposite direction, converting tungsten lights to daylight, I use bulldog clips because they dont go on fire!

It used to be the fashion to fully correct everything but now people tend to half correct, letting daylight go slightly blue in an indoor scene.

Remember to set your WB according to what effect you want.

I have had a look at the flashgels website and think that's the route I will most likely take.

Just measured up the 540 flash and it looks like the 4cm gel strips may just fit but I'm not too sure.

Has anyone used these gels ?
and if so which size would be best the 4cm or 5cm ones ?

Yeh, I got a set of 5cm ones. It is worth it for the future, if you going to be adding more flashguns in the future you might get others that are taller/wider.

540fgz has fairly large flash head compared to others. Plus if you are going to be using snoots and other such addons you might need that extra 1cm.
