Some fantastic shots of late on the Gallery.........what's happened? Quality seems to me to have shot up.........some members posting a great series of images.

Thoughts?

I'm glad you think so David, and I agree, there have been some great shots.

There have been some good shots, David. Exotic locations like Iceland help, as do some of our overseas contributors who have interesting ideas.

There have also been some terrific monochrome images from members in Wales and California inter-alia.

The Gallery is always my first port of call as the final image is really what it's all about, for me at least.

The important thing is that members care about the shots they've taken and value them enough to share them with others. Before digital photography and the inter-net, very few people would get to see the work of amateurs. Mainly family passing round an album or a few camera club members watching slides in a draughty church hall.

We may not often meet in person but a community of sorts has developed.
Best wishes,

Andrew

I've been thinking the same for a few weeks now. Also the quality in The Forum seems to have improved. Comments on the submissions have also become more informed on the whole. Its a pity that while entries in the weekly and monthly competitions have also shown a jump in quality numbers are down compared to previous years.

I haven't found time to look at the Gallery much recently, but have to say, having now had a look at some of the recent shots - have to agree, some very nice shots indeed.

The fact that I haven't posted any in the Gallery for some time may be a contributing factor

I have now caught up with myself and finally sorted out images taken over the past month or two so will start posting a few - hope I don't bring the quality down.

I think the Gallery is one of this sites strengths, I rarely post anywhere else. During the recent rumblings of discontent there were great images added while at the same time some complained nothing was going on(!)

I agree. I would only add that sometimes it's difficult to appreciate how good an image is just from the thumbnail and I guess I'm as guilty as most in not opening as many thumbnails as perhaps I should.

I also agree about the 'average' quality. There have always been some really excellent images posted mixed in with some less good ones, but now there do seem to be a higher proportion of good ones. The international spread of both contributors and 'exotic' locations also helps as Andrew noted.

However, I'm less interested in the reason than the result. The more high quality images that are posted, the more they may inspire others (well it does me!); and the more good photographers will be encouraged to put up some of their images -that benefits all of us.

It can be difficult to judge, add to that the time it would take to check every new entry, I usually open the eye catching thumbnails or those by members I usually know I'd like.

You know on Bing images when you hover over a thumbnail it quickly pops out bigger for a quick look, then jumps back down again as soon as you move away ... It helps to check an image quickly and is much faster than clicking to open the image totally. If is was possible technically it would be a good additional function on our gallery here, allowing us to review many more images to assess them .

I have very limited forum time at present, (not even enough time for one forum, let alone two ), school holidays and we're on holiday on the Dorset coast, so anything that helps me to see more gallery images more quickly at a viewable size will be an interesting improvement. I'll make a suggestion to the team ...or should I mention it in the 'please sort it out' thread?

I don't frequent the Gallery section much, so not for me to compare.

However, is it possible that there aren't more quality images. But in fact less run of the mill images?

Maybe with all the recent upheaval, less images are being uploaded. And its the run of the mill ones that have dropped away and we are left with the residual high quality.

Be interesting to see some statistics on volumes of uploads

Ah yes Alan, that's probably right ... So you mean that its mostly the run of the mill photographers who have moved to posting elsewhere and the better ones who have stayed here?
