I have the Tamron 70-300, would this be an upgrade in terms of a replacement lens?

I am looking for somthing that does not add extra weight and has better performance all round, especially with respect to CA.

It would be a big upgrade from the Tamron

to be honest, having only used the cheaper Tamron 70-300 (which the Pentax 55-300 is far more superior)I cant really give you a qualified opinion as to the relative merits of the Pentax against your Tamron.

it is usually argued on this forum that Pentax lenses will always outperform third party lenses on a Pentax camera. try www.photozone.de. They might have a detailed comparison / report on each lens. Otherwise, ask the same question in the Lenses section on the forum. John Riley is the best person to ask I think, as he is rather unbias.

Regards

Pete

sorry, just noticed you listed your Tamron as 'Tamron 70-300' The missing comma made me think there were suffixes after the lens. Yes it is a huge upgrade. My Tamron suffered greatly from CA and PF.

Sorry, my eyesight seems to be getting worse these days.

I used the Tamron quite a bit before upgrading. I wouldn't raise expectations that much. An upgrade but possibly small to moderate was more realistic for me in the real world. Only slightly less fringing except in extreme conditions, a bit sharper at the top end, 55mm so wider , focusing slightly quicker but as noisy. Quickshift is handy but offset by lacking the macro in my opinion. Nevertheless a well worthwhile upgrade I would say.

I havn't used the macro feature for some time, as I have the 100mm WR macro!

Sounds exactly what I want - less CA and a little sharper, though it is 5.8 verses the Tami 5.6 at 300mm!
