I've been curious about getting one of these for a while - when you say not good for moving objects - can you expand? - I was thinking for close up insect work - aphids etc.

Here's response to a post on Ephotozine regarding these LED flights that should help....I've been curious about getting one of these for a while - when you say not good for moving objects - can you expand? - I was thinking for close up insect work - aphids etc.

OK, maybe a blanket “absolutely useless” was the wrong phrase to use.
I have the 48 LED Meike model (same as Travor RF550D), the problem I have with these LED macro lights are based on using them to capture moving object, i.e. insects etc.

For static objects they can be useful but you have to be prepared to use wide apertures/high ISO to make the light output work for you, for use where the subject is on the move they are IMO useless. Why? Unlike conventional flash guns which typically output the desired amount of light at speeds >1/700 sec these LED’s take up to 1/100 sec to reach full brightness (they don’t flash like normal flash guns) hence your maximum shutter speed will require to be equal or less than 1/100 sec which IMO is “useless” for moving subjects.
Some other things to take in to consideration, while convention flash guns use a capacitor to power the flash tube (every flash will have the desired output) these LED guns are reliant on the charge in the batteries, as the batteries deplete the light output depletes as well, also most of these LED units state switchable full, left or right power, this setting is only available in the continuous light mode which has roughly half the lighting power as the flash mode.
I hope this is a useful post.
