Hello all,

today I took some time to clean the lenses and finally decided to take a few pictures of this lens and try to find a new home for it.
I bought this lens used in 2015, unfortunately during the shipment something went wrong: when it arrived it was damaged.
At that time I was trying to figure out how to repair it, but never seriously got into it due to limited free time, and eventually buying another copy from timbo on this forum.
Basically I was trying to hide the pain

Few remarks about the lens:
- Sigma 8-16 pentax mount
- smashed rear cap
- damaged front cover (scratched cap and dented cylindrical band)
- focus ring moves well (identical to the good copy in my hands)
- zoom ring moves all over the range (slightly higher friction compared to the other copy)
- lens cannot be mounted on camera, due to bayonet being deformed
- glass looks perfectly ok
- AF...who knows
- aperture lever is stuck
- soft case is not broken

Maybe someone wants to disassemble it and try to repair it or simply has a good copy with a scratched front element...during this lockdown we need to pass the time somehow...

I hope I am not going against the guidelines with this topic, as I don't know what this is really worth.
I am open to suggestions, offers and why not, jokes (at the moment it is the most expensive paperweight I own ).
I will consider to put it on ebay if no one here shows interest.

Let me know if you need more detailed pictures.

Stay safe,

Dario

If I'd purchased a lens and it arrived like that I'd have returned it. (Unless I knew the condition at time of sale like you have described it.) It must surely have ben like that before being packed as the case would have suffered damage too.
If it really got damaged in transit it is still the seller's responsibility to sort it out with the courier company as it isn't yours until it gets delivered. If the packaging gave some clue to possible damage note that with the courier which would help the seller get compensation. You shouldn't have suffered the loss.

I bought almost every lens used:
- mainly in pentax forums, where I am quite sure sellers know what they are selling, most times they care about it (and want to keep high reputation)
- via mainstream websites, when I had the possibility to inspect the lenses in person
This was the only case I bought on a mainstream site seeing only pictures of the item. I truly believe that the lens was fine before shipping, but the stars were aligned:
- seller did pack with insufficient care (light carton and the soft case inside), despite my explicit request
- seller did not pay for a shipping insurance (my fault as I thought it was obvious)
- I was not at home when the pack arrived. Deformation was visible, but the parcel was not refused (we can assume the instruction I gave were not enough clear)

Long story short, key take away: buy in camera enthusiasts forums or go and get the stuff personally.
I have been mad for a few weeks, but time eases the pain and I can say I learned the lesson...

Cheers

Dario
