Are the optics identical to the WR version? (apart from outer element coating)
ie is IQ absolutely equal?

As far as I know the coating is the same. The difference is the amount of blades (WR version gives a different type of bokeh) and construction.
To be honest the only reason I bothered with the WR version is price. At it's normal selling amount of £479 I would have happily passed because to me there is really nothing in it.

I keep thinking of some of the soggy butterfly farms I've been to in the past, as well as a forthcoming project for sea life forms on the coast here in Brittany where I am ... maybe has to be the WR version...
