Four Flowers

I find myself drawn to dark backgrounds and I've been trying to make my shots of flowers a bit more interesting. So I should be grateful for opinions on whether these work or not.

Disclaimer - me no expert

BUT I think my favourite shot of these is #2

The colours of the rose are so very delicate and the beads of dew are still very distinct. The background gives just enough hint as to stalk and a little greenery . It's almost translucent - it's gorgeous .

#1 - here I think the background is just too dark - a lot of the flower is not seen - a wee bit more of it would help .

The other two are fine .

Doc, the Iris at #3 would be my pick, followed by #4. The rose looks as if it may benefit from a boost in brightness / touch up in curves?

Not sure what the first flower is - a gerbera or like? It doesn't jump out at me as I thought it might, and I'm not sure why.

Works beautifully for me Doc - stunning shots - #4 #2 #3 #1 in my simple view.

Lovely idea - many years ago I had a local artist commissioned to paint a series of similar flowers in oils on black velvet for a new hotel wing we were opening - still have them in the loft somewhere too.

Nice shots!

Number 1 is my favourite. I like the lighting best in that one.

3 and 4 are good too but the harsh light has resulted in some hard shadows of the stamens. Nice colours in both of them though, and the water droplets on 4 are great.

2 seems underexposed to me.

Thanks a lot for the comments, which are very useful. The last two images are the look I would like to persist with and I can see now that they are a bit harsh, so here are more softened versions and I've also photoshopped in some water droplets to 3:

The dark backgrounds certainly show off these flowers to perfection.
Best wishes,

Andrew

I'm with Tim - number 1 is a great shot to my eyes. I think you have done well with this set. The thing I like about the first, I think, is that it looks as if it's gently glowing from within... nice work

Thank goodness someone else appreciates that rose - I was getting worried as to what was wrong with me .

I've seen porcelain roses that are translucent and very delicately coloured - and this one reminded me of those . All the ones round here [ that are actually surviving the rain ] are much brighter and sort of 'densely ' coloured .

And BTW - this is someone who had very gorgeous gold roses for her wedding flowers - they were absolutely fantastic

I also agree with Tim! I like the luminous quality to no.1, but the lighting is too severe for the last two. I wonder if the black background does the subtlety of the rose any favours.
