I wonder if it is possible to consider a background colour change on this forum to Black or a dark grey?
Photos do look a million times better on dark backgrounds with they're tones and colours much better represented, and I kind of wonder why photographic forums don't use these shades.

Have a look at www.picturesdirect.org and see how dreadful black looks - so heavy and "blocky" that you can hardly read the text content.

I do agree though that black is a good background for photos and that's what I always choose on EPZ.

It seems we may be out of step with fashion though, as exhibitions are now going back to cream mounts.

I am quite often disappointed, having worked on my images in PSE7 with a dark grey background to see what they look like once posted on a very pale background

Seems a good idea to me.

There is a way around this without making any changes - put your image on a grey or black canvas, with the canvas being 800 pixels wide and the image fitting within it.

To make a canvas of the required colour go File>New and select the colour that you want. Then drag your image into that, flatten and it's done. Don't forget everything should be the right size though.

Alternatively, you can resize the your image to 700 pixels rather than the full 800. Then resize the canvas by 100 pixels (ticking the 'relative' resizing box, and selecting a black extension colour).

Sorry, That would just look, like a big ugly border.

I would like a colour change also but there is probably a good reason for it being gray maybe text wise. The black on picturesdirect looks aweful.

Here is an example;
Black canvas is 800 x 711, actual picture is 700 x 611
IMO butt ugly.......

There are websites who allow changing the colour scheme in Site Preferences. This website doesn't offer this option.

For those not around so long, it could have been much worse.
The initial revamp of this website brought us a very painful deep red as colour scheme. IIRC

Martin, I think a 4 pixel wide white line around the image would help enormously. That colour doesn't blend with black though at all, so a different canvas colour would help.

Hanging on a wall, nicely framed I agree. But over here I like to see the pictures as large as possible, without any interference. I already feel limited in the recommended pixel limit of 800 on the longest side.
But....that's just personal

No problem... I was trying to offer an alternative method to John's. Did I actually say it would look nice? [Edit: Of course there probably are images which might be set off by such a border, but your imploding lemon jelly just doesn't happen to be one of them ]

Obviously the method can be adjusted to suit - I use 4 pixels for a thin black line having gone through my 'butt ugly border' phase a long time ago.

That's fair enough. I don't anticipate I'll be making any backgrounds on here either, but for those that want to we've come up with a few ideas, and hopefully something they can use.

You can of course always fiddle in your browser, and change the way every website appears. You want dark grey ?? You can have it......

John and Sanderscapes, I don't have any problem with the picturesdirect site, but I think it could be better. Although that site has made me think a Dark Grey would be better, jus' like in Lightroom 2.

Martin, how do you do that? You have freaked me out with what you have done there.
Would you mind explainin' to me how to do it? Is it under Tools in Options?

No problem Paul, but you won't like it, as I didn't. It has major consequences on the appearance of the website ( all sites you visit browsing)
This is for Firefox BTW.
Go to extra-----options
A box will appear with several tabs. Click on content.
Than click on the colour button beneath advanced.
A second box appears.
Here you can change the colour of the text, background, links and unused links.
You also have to disable the option: allow websites to choose their own colour, instead of my selection.
Press twice OK to leave and commit changes.

The good news: You have a nice grey(or whatever colour)overall background
The Bad news: It is the same on every website you visit and colour pictures do not show. Only the B & W ones.

So, regrettable...It doesn't work Sorry for giving you false hope.
I was about to post this, but you were just ahead of me.

Martin.
Best regards,

Martin.
