personaly i like the first one,
also i think the colour of the wren is more natural,

I like the first one too, gives a much denser sorrounding and the bird in the middle has that fantastic impact.
It wouldnt't have been that nice if the leaves were in focus, its the fact that the bluriness of the background and foreground for that matter makes the iamge more appealing to my eye

First one for me as well.....just do a closer crop,it will make a much better shot!......Ken

Out of the two, the first one for me also, its seems kinder on the eye.

Thanks guys.
Although no one seemed to spot the difference (difficult at those sizes)
The first has been run through Focus Magic and by god the original was a country mile off.
I will now need to get the focus test done as a matter of urgency over the weekend.
I called Sigma today about it and when i told him what camera he advised me to do Manual and AF tests.

What I don't like about No 1 is the lower contrast - there are no highlights left whatsoever, which does reduce the "sparkle" of the image.
Just out of curiosity, where exactly did you focus and what aperture and shutter speed did you use?

Handheld @ 400mm, f8, 1/125, i was positive i was focusing on the face although he was about 20 foot up in a tree.

The eyes are the thing in portraits, be they people, birds, animals or whatever else, so focusing on the face is the right way to go but maybe not precise enough, depending on the DOF.
1/125 sec handheld for a 400mm lens is borderline with SR for a static subject. The biggest problem here may be subject movement coupled with a bit of camera shake.
My solution would be to up the ISO and maybe use a tripod, but with the head left slightly loose so that the camera can be moved.
