Focassing - Lens or Camera?

I was just passing Jessops and tried a non pentax camera. The focus was so fast and quiet that I wasn't even sure that the camera was focussing at all! It was not all roses, but it showed me what is possible. The K5ii/iis is on my shopping list (money boxes already stacking up).

However, this got me thinking, I have one lens the 18-135 that focuses much faster and, it feel, more accurately than any other lens I have.

So how much of an improvement in focussing speed will I get from my K7 to the K5ii with the same lenses?

The camera delivers the accuracy, but is it the lense that delivers the focussing speed?

I will settle for more accurate focusing, but will I be focussing at the same speed? I know hunting should be reduced so lets asume no hunting in the first place.

Any thoughts?

I think the biggest difference between my gx20 (k20d) and the k-5 is that my gx20 tends to step back and forth until focus is correct where the k-5 just locks on. Focus speed does also rely on the lens, my da35 is so fast compared to my da50-135mm. So yes body does make a difference but lens does too....

IMHO the reason Pentax top the focusing accuracy charts but not the absolute fastest focusing is the micro-adjustments their cameras/lenses make to achieve that accuracy in the first place.

If absolute focusing speed and FPS is not your requirement (think birds, racing cars etc) then the Pentax system may be better for you anyway. Pentax. Pentax DA*300/4, Cosina 55/1.2, Lens Baby Composer Pro & Edge 80, AFA x1.7, Metz 50 af1.
