I purchased a *ist DS in Feb 2005 and on a holiday last week in Wales I was using teh internal flash when a large 'bang' occurred - a veritable explosion.

The flash no longer worked at all, though teh rest of the camera seemed to function OK and in fact went on for teh fornight to deliver over 1500 shots without any further difficulties.

Anyone any ideas about what might habe happened (capacitor??) ?? Anyone experienced anything similar with a DS ??

Cheers and thanks

Steve

never heard of any camera that did that, so it looks like a Warranty Repair is needed.

At least the camera continued to function in all other respects, which is something.

If you can't see anything wrong with the flash tube, then it sounds to me as though something shorted the capacitor. You're lucky the camera continued to function in other respects because for a brief moment you had quite a lot of electricity flying around.

Hello again guys and gals,

I have e-mailed Pentax UK on the subject of having the DS repaired under warranty following teh above mentioned explosion. E-mailed them last Sunday BUT still had no response whatsoever - not even an acknowledgement.

Anyone had dealings with Pentax UK? Are they normallt tardy? Anyone have a phone number ans well as any other e-mail addresses?

Many thanks people.

Telephone number of Pentax UK in Slough is 01753 792 792. They are not open at the weekend. On the one occasion I called with a query I found them helpful.

I've found them to be extremely helpful in the past, but I emailed a query to the service dept. about a fortnight ago and I'm still waiting for a response

I guess I'm lucky. Pentax USA in Colorado is very helpful, and even has forwarded some of my feature requests to the engineers in Japan. They respond to emails promptly, and will take phone calls.

Now, if the engineers are willing to listen to an American barbarian is another question altogether!

It's nearly always best to telephone, rather than email.
