Flash choice for K7

Posted 17/01/2010 - 09:53 Link
I've significant birthday coming up, and was considering asking for a flash for my K7. I'm a complete novice with Flash & would welcome some guidance on what products would be suitable. Since I'm a novice I've no real idea of the application I'd use it for - so something that covers most of the bases would be good. Budget is around £200

Thanks in advance

Samsung SEF-36PZF/Pentax AF360FGZ would be a great choice. (They're one and the same!) There's a Samsung one for sale in the Classified Section.

Or the Metz 48 AF-1, it is a bit more powerful and it has a swivel head, but it has a crippled wireless-mode.
You can't use the flash to trigger another flash but that's it.

Here is a comparison between the flashes.

I have three Sigma EF530DG Super. They work like a charm with the K-7 (and any other Pentax)

I recently purchased a Metz 58 AF-1, a bit more expensive but capable of good results with the K-7. If you look at the boxing photos on my Flickr site they were taken with this combination:

Lafone Cup

Hope this helps,

@gareth
The firmware update was for the 58 AF-1 in which they changed something in the way it triggers other flashes.
The 48 does not support the "master/control" function.

The 58 AF-1 has full wireless support and it has an 'A' mode which in the vast majority of situations works better then P-TTL mode.

The Metz units are built way better than the AF-360FGZ which has the most stupid design for the battery door which breaks easily.

Golfdiesel, there was also an update for the Metz48 but like you said it doesn't support master/control function.

This was updated:
Metz 48
1. Flash range indication enhanced.
2. Test flash with partial light input level.

Metz 58
1. Operation of second reflector enhanced.
2. Start signal in remote master mode changed from second reflector to main reflector.
3. Setting of the parameter values by repeat key.

Also the pentax AF360 & AF540 also have the "A" mode, it seems though P-TTL has been improved in the K-7, haven't tested it yet in the K-X.
My uncle has one so could try it tomorrow.
