I didn't realise how this makes one think of what to post. Having seen some excellent work in the previous sets I gave up considering what to show or even a theme. So this first was taken on Saturday afternoon down at Lake Clifton. I've posted shots from there before so I hope this is a different slant on a well used location. K3 and Sigy 10-20mm.

With this and the rest which will follow, please feel totally free to "get stuck in" and criticise.

When first I opened this image I only saw the walkway up to the water and thought it was the bridge at Aberlady in Scotland. I wonder if you have tried converting this to Mono ?

I like the subtle tones and the exposure looks very well controlled. I stayed close to Perth several times during the early 2000s, but didn't have a camera with me and missed countless opportunities to shoot gorgeous landscapes, kangaroos, spectacular Indian Ocean sunsets, sea eagles and so on.

If anybody has a handy Tardis, let me know...

Love the subtle tones throughout, and I agree with Stan's comment - look ripe for a B&W conversion, especially with those clouds.

I also wonder how it might work with a crop on the right to the edge of the walkway itself (so that the handrail leaves the frame)? I think that might strengthen the effect of the end of the walkway 'pointing' at the light (blue?) sky on the left hand side of the frame.

I think this is a lovely shot, as Simon says, the exposure is very well controlled and as Stan says it would look great in mono. For me, it is crying out for one other feature - a person positioned strategically on the walkway. Did you have a tripod with you when you took it? If so, that person could have been you!

I like the way the walkway leads into the storm!
C&C welcome.

Its very restful on the eyes Gary, the sort of place you would enjoy by just being there. It seems several of us are wondering if this would be better in black and white, but I think it would only work in mono if the contrast could be considerably increased.

Many thanks for the comments all. I did consider a crop to let the fence lead in from the edge but decided to leave it as is. Also did a couple of B&W versions but just wasn't happy with my efforts.

So onto the second image. I have a feeling that I may have posted this before? If so, apologies in advance.

Is that a barking owl? Whatever it might be, this is a splendid portrait ripe with wonderful detail. I assume it's in a collection somewhere, for such proximity to be possible with a 100mm lens. Either that or it's stuffed...

Great shot.

Yes, the owl shot is stunning, amazing eyes and so sharp as well! Glad to see you're off on your 5 in a row journey I do like the layout of your first shot with the leading line into the scene, but I do, perhaps unsurprisingly, find it too muted in colour interest, subdued but in a dull sense. Also the bit of near clipped cloud smack in the centre of the sky is a bit of a jolt for me. It may be that some contrast work and vibrancy boosting could improved this all for me, but I know the results may not be to everyone's tastes.

Wow Could have been Jim Henson's inspiration for Gonzo. BTW I find the first images far less disturbing
