First play with the Siggy 17-70

A few days ago I purchased the Siggy 17-70 from a form member; and after a quick play I realised this was quite a sharp shooter!

So today I expected it to perform well as an all-purpose walkabout.

I wasn't disappointed. I've been able to crop heavily in some shots. This lens I think will happily fill the gap that my Tamron 18-250 left whilst as the same time giving me a better performing standard zoom for weddings etc.

Today I also made a decision to try a style of photography that I have'nt really done much so far: street candid.

All taken with the K20D (ungripped) and the Sigma 17-70:

I upgraded from the kit Sigma 18-55 to the 17-70 & have been very happy with the lens - certainly it's a lot better than the 18-55.

Recently I've bought some primes which I'm loving but now I wonder what I will use for traveling next time; the 17-70 or the primes. The 17-70 makes more sense as it's so versatile & produces such good results. However I'll probably take a fast prime, probably the FA31 for low light & night shots - however the DA21 is excellent for street, it's compact & light too.

All good shots Bob but for Street I like images 2, 3 & 5 best although #1 is very appealing.

That will explain the heavy crops then Bob

I do like the last shot, while feeling ashamed that I`ve spent all day indoors, despite living 1 mile from where you took the image
Looks like a nice lens.

I owned the Sigma 17-70 before my current DA17-70 and it's a terrific lens which is definitely a good step up from the kit lens, nice shots - I should really get into Chester more with the camera!!

I have this lens also and liked it from day one although it does add more weight to the overall package compared to a camera fitted with the kit lens

Bigger & heavier than the kit Sigma 18-55 I had but it is also a lot more capable.

If I need to travel light, I'll plonk the 35mm DAL on the K-x. It isn't really a concern.

I find that at 17mm it's a lot wider than I expected, plus the excellent resolution/sharpness it achieves means it goes far beyond 70mm in terms of cropping potential. Coupled with 1:2 macro - a very versatile lens this one.

In fact I took the macro capability out for a test earlier too:

I appreciate it's not a 'true' macro lens - but 1:2 isn't bad at all when compared to other lenses sporting the moniker 'macro'.

I love #5, the girl behind the lamppost.

And yup, I have this lens and use it regularly. Highly recommended, great IQ, handy range and the extremely close focus ability is well handy for abstracts

Number 5 is a lovely picture with great composition, the macro capability is a winner by the look of it. You must be really pleased with this lens.
