First ever DSLR pictures..

This is my first attempt at taking pictures with my first DSLR, just thought I'd add what I think are my best shots so far. Criticism is welcomed.

Hi StarScr33m - very brave to share your very first shots - asking for feedback in this early stage is not something, many photographers would do.
OK here my feedback. I somehow miss the the special something in these pictures - they are all a bit unmotivated. Not sure if you just wanted to test the technical capabilities of your gear or if you wanted to shot real photographs. I love photos when they somehow touch me - this can be a strong atmosphere/message, an unusal surprising motive, a special composition or a special PP..... These things Idon't see in your pictures.
From a more technical view point. I think, some crops are not ideal (truck and cake), the DOF in the last picture is to blur on this thing on the table, the night shot is slightly tilted to the left and sharpness is not really good in the cake picture. The cake also seems to have a non-ideal white balance (I assume, the cream is not that yeallow in real life).
However - all this is mainly subective - it is only my opinion on pictures - one of 20 millions
But again - great you decide to share your work - I also did that when I started DSLR and it was amazing for me to experience the improvements I made in the first year of community ativity

Welcome to the forum, and I admire your bravery, jumping straight in with a set of photographs from your brand spanking new K-r!

Others might know immediately what you're looking for in terms of critique, but for me I'd simply say look closely at composition; watch out for distractions in the background, parts of the subject cut off, etc.

You've chosen a great camera and clearly have an eye to experiment with your subjects. I look forward to seeing more.

PS. Any cake left?

Can you send me the recipe for the cake please The exposure looks pretty right on the night time scene and the shoe is well focused but interest wise they don't do a lot for me but as a first timer you will only improve and probably head in a direction that suits you, that's when you start forking out on various lens options.

Thanks for the feedback guys. These pictures were simply taken to test the capability of the camera and lens. The only picture I cropped was the second one with the trainers. I haven't touched up any of the pictures in any other way, I imported them from RAW in to Adobe Lightroom and then just resized and saved them. Hopefully I can take some much more meaningful pictures soon, weather permitting ofcourse.

It is perfectly possible to take meaningful pictures in bad weather!

Good luck, and remember that the background can be just as important to get right as the main subject.

That is a splendid piece of advice...and one which I wish I could remember!
