Please excuse the composure of this image there was a lot of signs and adverts and also the wrong lens was taken for this type of shot.

these are my first attempts at both hdr and auto bracketing.

I really like the natural colours of the first one. HDR, although initially arresting, is often like a bilious attack! You've kept control and produced a lovely, balanced image.

Well done.

Ah...in that case I like that version too: it has a fine range of tones. Both colour and mono have their virtues so I'm not going to choose! May I ask which cathedral?

Andrew

It was Peterborough Cathedral

Witch is really nice BUT it is a working Cathedral and as you are not allowed to take images while service is going on, it is worth a visit really pretty

£2.00 for a camera pass

James

it was a dull day buy I will try again when the weather is better

Definitely the BW version for me. The first two versions are okay but suffer from the normal HDR problem of lack of contrast.

Hi James,

If course, Peterborough...lots of Romanesque stuff, at least in the nave. When we visited, years ago, they'd had a fire, caused by a stack of plastic chairs and the place looked a mess.

You realise if you go on the bright day the need for HDR will be even more acute as the contrast will rise! Much more challenging.

BW for me too. I find that having created an image using Photomatix I have to import it into CS3 to adjust contrast etc. otherwise it looks too flat!

That's great, James. Very gritty and full of character. My favourite so far.

I like the archway as well James, I do not like HDR when it's overdone but that is great

Photomatix is pretty good and the book I have on HDR seems to rate it very highly. I think in general that the process of squishing the DR down makes the image flat and a second stage of tweaking the contrast gives it life again. I don't think there is a way around it, but as I import all my HDR images into Lightroom I just tweak it there before exporting the jpg.

Best wishes, Kris.

thank you Andrew and Colin for your comments I don't like HDR overdone.

Kris thank you for your advice I came to the same conclusion as well.

I may get the Photomatix software later on. But I'm not going to get that hung up on AB and HDR.

HDR has its place, and architectural interiors is one of them, but it can be over-used and over-done. I know, because I have both over-used and over-done it. Did you see that graph the other week with one's actual skills and one's perceived skills? The "buy first tripod, enter slough of HDR" was too true! LOL...
