Firmware download

I have just read in the latest edition of Pentax user, that there is new firmware version out for the K20D. I have downloaded it, but the instuctions say I have to copy a file into the SD card root directory, does anyone know how to do this, I simply copied the file on to the SD card and of, nothing happened and I don't know how to find the cards root directory, any ideas anyone please??

Did you follow the instructions on how to turn the camera on with the prepared card in the slot ?

You're on the right lines, copying to the root directory simply means copying to the card but *not* placing it in any folder or sub-folder. With the K10D you have to insert the card and then switch the camera on whilst simultaneously holding down the "Menu" button - check your instructions to be sure, but I'd bet the procedure's the same for the K20D. Make sure your battery is fully charged before starting!

I copied the file on to the card (not in a folder) turned the camera on pressing the menu button, the version came up but it did not load up the new software, after 5 seconds the camera just came on as normal.

Did you extract the exe file from the download ?. Forgive me for saying, but unless you have some idea what you are doing you are in danger of screwing up the firmware in your K20d. Which will then cost you to get sorted !.

Merlin might have the answer to your problem. The file you download looks like a microwave oven. You need to double click it and it produces a BIN file and a read-me file. Make sure you copy the BIN file to the card.

Also format the card first in the camera. Then add the BIN file.

I would download the firmware again in case it got corrupted. Make sure you use the right one....i think it is different for mac/windows.

Yes I extacted the file and copied the BIN file to the card but nothing happened. the instructions say 'copy the file to the root directory on the card' not just 'copy the file to the card', so there has to be a difference between the 2 processes. I have root directories before, just not sure how I got to them ?!?!?!?

Yep you just copy the file so that it sits next to any other folder that might be there, not in the other folder.

Did you re-download the firmware and format the card in camera first?
