Firefox 4 don't bother!

What utter rubbish..... loads of silly changes just for the sake of change. i.e. moving icons about so that you can't find them. Home Icon moved from left hand side of screen to right. No-Script icon moved from bottom right to top left.

Page Tabs moved from below other bookmarks and toolbars to top of them so you can't keep proper track of what one's are open.

Gone back to v3.6.16 which still has a lot of unwelcome changes, but it's better than v4

Argh!!! The home icons still on the right and the reload icons 3/4 of the way across the page..... Looks like I'll have to download Opera...... or try Firefox 2

I went to 4 a few days ago ... as you say, change just for the sake of it.

Ive found FF4 is a lot faster than 3, and that's with NoScript and ABP loaded.

Gestures aren't supported right now, but that should come soon enough. From here they're bringing the UI up to the stand of Chrome last year and IE10 won't be much different, I think.

Opera Mini on the N900 is rather good, though

You mustn't open many URL's by right clicking? They've changed the "open in a new tab" and "open in a new window around" and I'm that used to doing it without looking that I kept opening New Windows instead of New Tabs.

I'm referring to the Windows PC version of Firefox 4 not the Mac version. I don't know anything about that apart from stay well away from their browser in Windows, because it won a competition for being the easiest browser to hack!!

Another vote against it. The drop down arrow next to the previous/next page arrows has gone, and when I use it at work to download data sheets from RS and Farnell, it simply goes to "about blank" and fails to download the PDF.

set your helper application correctly and it should be fine. I use mine to just download MP3s rather than play them....

The green "go back" and "go forward" buttons have also gone replaced with grey ones that you can hardly see. I used to use that as a warning that I had gone forward a page and not onto a new tab.

I've now gone back to v2 and the Fasterfox add-on which I've always missed because they never took it beyond v2 It has a progress bar and time for how long each page takes to load. This one took 0.330 seconds

Also with v2 any new tabs always open at the end of the line of tabs, not wherever they want like with v3 and v4.

I'd like to go back to v1.5 which had the Red Close Tab Button an the right of the screen on the tab line, so you didn't have to look for which one to press. It always closed the page you had open and you could keep clicking to close as many as you want. The latest v4 has a + and a cross together and you have to be careful not to click the wrong one.

I guess it depends how you are used to using the browser as I've never right clicked a url as I have a plugin that allows me to drag & drop links to a new tab and for many things I use keyboard shortcuts rather than the buttons across the top. I would find it annoying if that was my way of working though ...

To be honest I used to use IE7 with the IE7Pro plugin, then when that didn't work in IE8 I switched to firefox + plugins to recreate the same functionality.

I didn't find Firefox 3.6 any faster than IE7 or IE8, and I don't think Firefox 4 is any faster than 3.6? I mustn't pay enough attention!

My right click to open goes back to Opera which had TWO
options "Open and go to the TAB" or "Open hidden". The last
one is the only one available in Firefox, you have to click
the TAB to go to it which I'm used to.

The only improvement I've seen In Firefox 4 is the
"Paste and GO" which they have copied off Opera.

Under the Tab tab in Preferences to change behaviour open tab for FF (check 'When I open a link in anew tab, switch to it immediately').

Why are you all messing with right click? Now I understand the action - I open tabs all the time - but just MIDDLE-click the link. Try it! You'll save hours of time. (Donations please to layingback.net :lol

FF4's goal was to match Chrome's UI. Don't see the benefit personally, but then I have a decent monitor, as presumably most do here. The UI Google came up with does maximise the available height of the browser window, which in turn is necessary due to the number of monitors, and laptops, now going to lower resolution (cost reduction). Even many of the 19" ones are now only 1366x768: that's no more vertical resolution than an old-aspect-ration 15"!!!

I can't middle click, because I use a Logitech Marble Mouse which has a marble ball where the middle button goes. much better than a normal mouse, especially for a laptop, although I'm mostly using a desktop. I could probably assign it to "click both buttons" or one of the other 2 buttons, but don't need it.

I don't want to switch tabs immediately. I prefer to let the next page load in the background.

Bummer! Glad I selected the Logitech Trackman Marble over the Marble Mouse, although I chose it for the thumb ball, because I couldn't live without middle click/scroll!

Agreed. IWC you may be interested in about:config, set browser.tabs.closeButtons set to 0, which resets FF to FF1 behaviour of only putting Close Tab 'X" on the current tab - saves accidentally closing a Tab you haven't read yet.

'Fraid so. Discovered this when BIL wanted to upgrade his 15" 4x3 just for browser use really, and we discovered that most 19" widescreens were just wider 15" screens. Unbelievable! And most manufacturers had the gall to call them HD when the only HD-like element was the 16x9 a/r. (FWIW finally settled on the BenQ 21" with 1920x1080 HD res for under £100.)

Dunno what I'll do when my 1900x1200 monitor or ditto laptop dies ...

Not a problem... click both buttons at once and use Ball to scroll.

Brilliant! Just checked this site and with FF2 I've set it to 3 which gives me just the one Red X on the Right of the Tab Bar... just like v1.5... Not sure that I like it now after not using it for a few years.


I've set this Samsung SyncMaster 971P (4x3) to 800x600 for the time being so that pics on this forum fill the screen. Not many monitors apart from CRC's handle 800x600 too good.... I can switch back to 1280x1024 when I need to.

Samsung's resampling algorithms are pretty good - my Samsung TV resamples SD to HD at least as well as the Beeb's pathetic take on HD.

But given that an image of 800x600 from here is still going to be actually displayed at 1280x1024 on an LCD, then you might want to try Image Zoom add-on for FF. Allows resize of any image. You can configure right-click menu to include "Image Fit' so fullscreen view is only a pair of clicks away. I don't know whether the result will be better or worse than Samsung's resampling though, but it's another option.
