I think its a question of size - I have seen Kingfishers posted on here which are very obviously much much bigger - this helps I find, to distinquish the bird from the surroundings. I think you should concentrate on learning how to find Kingfishers that are MUCH MUCH bigger (they are so big they take up almost the whole picture, which is amazing!) I am sure there would be a book about where the big Kingfishers are, perhaps in your local library.
Also i think the composition could be improved a lot if the bird was more off-centre, and that would have the additional bonus of showing us even more of the lovely foliage off to the side!

You are one step ahead of me, I've only seen a kingfisher in flight so far, I've yet to see one even land. So not even got close to getting a photo.
I'm so jealous of some of the fabulous kingfisher shots posted on this site, but I've known for a long time, there's a lot more to it than having a 500mm lens.......

Actually it's a good point. There's loads of pics of large kingfishers being published all over the Net.
Mike has probably been lucky to find the very rare Bonzai Kingfisher of which I believe there are only 3 breeding pairs in existence.

I know its an old post that I'm resurrecting, but it has taken me this long to get my first shot. I know it's no competition winner, but I was lucky enough to press the shutter at just the right moment to capture not just one, but two, in the very first usable image I've ever managed to capture. It's a shame that a few branches got in the way, but I think the chances of ever getting a repeat opportunity are pretty unlikely !
