Filters on ME_super

There should be a standard screw thread for filters - I've yet to encounter a lens without one? It may take larger filters than the 50mm lens (which confusingly takes filters with a 49mm diameter).
You can fit filters to a zoom, the only thing to bear in mind is that if you're using a graduated ND or polariser then on most zooms it will be turned as you focus, as the front element rotates (producing a different effect as it's turned). This doesn't happen on most primes, like your 50mm.

Thankyou Matt. How I missed seeing the thread i shall never know - and i went to Specsavers! Yes it is there and i think it must be a 53mm. because on the lens there is an o with a forward slash thru it and 53. I assume that the actual filter size will therefore be 52mm.I have noted your comments about the graduated ND. Colin

The number on the front is usually the filter size. 53mm is a very odd size though! 52mm is far more common.
