Filters for the Bigma

The real worrying thing about salt is the fine spray you can feel on your face but not really see, as this can get into the camera and lens and cause internal corrosion. Back in the early eighties a friend of mine took some great pics on a cruise ship during a gale. he cleaned the camera carefully afterwards, but about 6 months later his bought for the cruise MX came to a grinding halt. After inspection by a repairer it was declared scrap! The lens was buggered too.

Not a lot of use for Clarky's Bigma but I bought this for those seascape situations:

I would use a UV on any lens if I was near salt water 'cos salt has a nasty habit of attacking lots of things and the coating could certainly be at risk. On such a nice lens as that why risk it. On such a long focal length it is very unlikely to affect picture quality. I personally don't think it affects any focal length with the exception of ultra wide angle lenses, the only lens I don't use a filter on is my Sigma 10-20mm. Coatings on car windscreens have been damaged by salt spray if left, leaving strange splodges visible in certain light angles.
I have heard about salt water and what it can do to lens coatings but i have never seen it or met anyone it has happened too

Coulds it be an old wives tale or just a rumour put out by the filter manufacturers : :
I've seen it leave permanent marks on lenses more expensive than anything Pentax makes. However I dont know if it had any discernible effect on optical quality in general use. Second hand value would be seriously affected though.

I suspect you would have to sort of carefully wash the salt spray off; if it dried then you could abrade the coatings at least.
