filter with 35mm limited?

Thanks all for your advices. I took the plunge with the 35mm limited from SRS.
I think I read somewhere that you can't use the built-in hood with a filter on. Is it true?

I'm considering getting a UV filter to protect this investment. *please I do not wish this thread to become a UV vs hood debate*

The only 49mm filter I have is a cheep +4 close-up filter which was an impulse buy that I hardly ever use as I have a decent macro lens.

However the built-in hood on my 35mm limited clears the outer edge of this filter with a little to spare so it is not even fouling the flock on the inside of the hood.

I therefore suspect that most filters will be fine but I guess the only safe way to handle this is to take the lens along and try it when purchasing the filter.

I have Hoya 49mm LPL and UV (not at the same time ) for mine - no problems.

I've found that the old genuine Pentax filters definitely have a thinner ring than third party ones. I can refit the older lens caps over the 49mm yellow one I have, but not with any of the otherwise fine 3rd party filters I use.

There isn't much in it at all - we're talking the proverbial cigarette paper's thickness. It wouldn't be a problem with the Pentax-F style caps or the centre pinch style found on DA zooms as they don't wrap over the rim of the lens barrel.

If you can get a genuine SMC coated Pentax UV filter then I'd go for it (they do come up used, and 49mm is pretty common). Otherwise I find myself thinking why buy a superb lens then stick a piece of glass with unknown coating in front of it?
