File size in photoshop elements

Common confusion exists, but here goes: Images on the computer and in Photoshop are measured in ppi (pixels per inch) and this should be 72ppi for screen and web and 300ppi for prints, unless your commercial printer requires a different resolution.
Printers lay down dots of ink in dpi (dots per inch) and a printer resolution might well be 1400dpi or 2880dpi or similar large amounts.
If you actually made an image in Photoshop at 2400ppi it would be an immense file and would take ages to load, clog up the memory and might not seem to load at all. If anyone every finds a file oddly large, then check you are sizing in ppi and not ppcm (pixels per inch not pixels per cm!) as it makes a bit of a difference.

Thanks John i think but i did scan the same print at 1200DPI and that was fine. BIKER - how big is the file you're trying to open (Mb's)..? Try opening the file in another program (Paint.net, for example), then resize the CANVAS SIZE. Usually, a jpeg measuring 4000 x 3000 pixels will have a canvas size of around 40 inches x 30 inches (or thereabouts) at 72dpi. Typically, a jpeg as I described here would be around 3-4Mb in size, but if it's the dpi in your image that measures 2400 dpi, this would make the file size something like 120-150 Mb!!

When scanning prints I usually go for about 800 ppi max otherwise there's a lot of information that isn't really useful (polite way of saying too much carp!)

An alternative to resizing the canvas would be to open this file in Picasa/Windows Pictures (I'm assuming you mean Windows Live Photo Gallery?), and look for RESIZE in whichever program. You can either:
(A) change the pixel size (from 4000 x 3000 to 600 x 400, for example)
(B) change the canvas size (generally, this "crops" the image)
(C) change the DPI's (if it currently reads 2400dpi, as you suggest, change it to 72/96dpi instead)
Personally, I'd recommend option C.

Be careful what you use to resize. There are different methods and sampling so for maximum quality use Photoshop and don't let anything else mess with the size of your images.
