These are intriguing lines in under the crop!
I've cropped away some sky, had a play with contrast and brightness, and dropped an ND filter down from the top. It probably hasn't made that much of a difference, and I'm happy to remove it should you wish Roger.

Thanks, i-Berg.
The lines in the sky, along with the texture of the field & the balance of the trees in the image, were what I was trying to capture!
Although I said "disappointing" in the title, the way the sky had a "layered" look was quite intriguing but how I could have brought that out in the pic., I don't know!
Your increase in contrast has certainly refined the structure of the silhouetted trees, however, & I think that looks much better.
Would the grad. filter have rendered the sky "better", I wonder?
Many thanks for your interest & please do not remove your version, let others learn as well as me!
Best Wishes,
Roger

Disappointing light here as well but this is a good shot: you can feel the cold!
Best wishes,
Andrew

The ND filter did improve the sky somewhat, it was because I chose to change the proportion of sky to ground that informed the crop. The intention was to focus the eye more on the intriguing lines in the field.

Thanks for all your constructive comments.
I don't find the light quite so disappointing now!
(Gareth, I'll crop it down to panorama shortly)
Roger.

I really liked the colour in the sky of the first version. The crops and modifications have lost the subtle tones.

Thanks, Gareth. I see what you mean.
However....
I can't help but feel the integrity(?) of the image is slipping away from me.
When I used to paint in watercolour, the same used to happen - the more one "fiddled", the muddier the painting became, as well as losing that immediacy with which it began.
It's a case, I suppose of knowing when to draw the line....
Thanks all for advice, input, patience & constructive help.
Onwards & upwards!
Roger.

I'm with David and like the original the most. It is subtle and has the feel of a watercolour.
