Fast Picture Viewer

A tip I read on another forum. Maybe already known to you, but if not, here http://www.fastpictureviewer.com/codecs/ you can download a free program that will allow you to see pictures, shot in RAW format, in Explorer as opposed to the icons that are usually displayed.

You can download the Pentax & Adobe codecs for free direct from their websites, but they only work on 32 bit systems.
This set of codecs appear to be 3rd party ones, I've just installed them & they work on 64 bit too !

Thanks for posting the link lidy, as I've had to remember to manually start a 32bit explorer window up until now !

You can download from Microsoft Raw codecs that work in XP and Vista in Windows Explorer

Tried them, never worked in XP for me. There was a registry hack for getting the Microsoft codec pack to work in XP, but that never did for me either.

I used to use a different utility to do it, but lost that after my last reformat, and it was always a bit of a kludge. This just installs and works.

Unfortunately not for 64bit

But the 64 bit codecs for this new viewer work like a charm. I've just purchased the Pro version and viewing of RAW files directly is great and extremely fast. Very impressed by this viewer package.

Greytop - are you using XP64 or Vista 64?

Why use a post-processing program to view pictures? Irfanview and Faststone are the tools for this.

For me it's being able to view untouched PEF files full screen in a fast viewer before editing in CaptureOne.

I am about to build a 64 bit machine but after all the bad things I have heard about Vista, I was thinking about XP64 or waiting for W7.

I had XP64 and well it worked but there aren't a lot of drivers around for it so if you consider XP64 check if there are drivers for your hardware.

I'm now using Win7 64 ultimate (build 7600) and it works good and better then xp64, I really like the interface of win7 and everything is working except the printer.
It's a canon ip4500 and only found out this morning so need to do some digging to find a solution.

Personally I'd opt for Windows 7. It's a fantastic OS with minimum requirements at less than Vista - it's been optimised so much better than Vista and demands less from your hardware.

It's as if they took the performance and reliability of XP and matched it with the swish-ness of Vista.

As you can probably tell, I love it.
