All the Pentax macro lenses are excellent lenses and this one is no exception. Yes, you can use it as a standard 50mm lens as well. The only drawback is the smaller maximum aperture and the higher cost.
In terms of price, there are fewer 50mm macros around than 100mm ones, so eBay will give you a current idea.

mmm Pentax's sharpest lens I like it a lot. Its organic lines look like it was made for the K-01 and the weight balances the K-5 nicely I tend to use it for product shots and macro rather than normal use. The long throw focus rack seems a bit slow for that.I'm fortunate to have its 1.4 sibling to compliment it. The only thing I miss is quickshift but less important with a macro.

I have had one of these for a couple of years and it is absolutely superb - sharp, beautiful colours, heavy and solid. If you can pick one up at a decent price then I doubt you'll regret it

Thank you for your thoughts LennyBloke and JohnRiley. I'm sort-of-torn between the FA50, Sigma 28 1.8 and DA35 macro ltd.
I already own three 100mm macro's; the Viv S1 105mm F2.5, Pentax-A 100mm F4 and the Cosina 100mm F3.5 AF, but wish to acquire an AF lens nearer to what might be considered a standard prime that also has a close focus or macro abilty.
I can't make my mind up at the moment, but the FA50 appeals partly because of it's rarity as well as it's build and optical qualities.
Decisions, decisions!!!...

Out of those three, DA35 is the way I'd go! The 35mm focal length is closest to a 'standard' (or normal) prime, great walkabout focal length. And the sharpness and rendering of the lens is pretty legendary.
Throw in genuine 1:1 macro and it's a sort of 'desert island' prime lens.... By which I mean, if I could only choose one, I'd choose this one!

Somewhere safe in deepest Lancashire.
Has anyone any thoughts about the quality of these and if such a lens would double as a standard 50mm as well as a macro, also what would be a reasonable price to expect to pay?
