Dimitri's site says this lens was made by Cosina. Does anybody have any experience with it or comments on its quality?

Many thanks, Kris.

Lots of film bodies, a couple of digital ones, too many lenses (mainly older glass) and a Horseman LE 5x4.

It's a simple construction, similar to the manual focus Pentax macro lenses, and it does deliver a very respectable performance.

As regards construction it's incredibly clunky for a Pentax lens and constructed of what seems like a mass of plastic. However, it is a good lens, just not as pretty as usual for Pentax!

It sells for a lot more than the other versions made by Cosina for Vivitar, Phoenix and of course the Cosina version itself.
As far as I know you pay at least double just for the name as there is no difference between then otherwise.

I knew would wouldn't let it lie!

There's also the colour rendition of course, might be different with the multi-coatings that the other models would undoubtedly have. I wouldn't have thought that there'd be much chance of flare in general use with such a recessed front element.

Good point.
Does the Pentax version need the seperate filter to do 1:1 macro like the others?
If so does that have the SMC coating?

As far as I recall the lens is a 1:2 macro. I am a little puzzled by the statement quoted though. Pentax have never supploed a filter to make 1:2 lenses into 1:1 magnification lenses, although they have supplied special extension tubes.

Pentax filters are generally SMC, although there may well be exceptions.

That is why I said ... like the others.
The Cosina, Vivitar and Phoenix versions all come with a screw on filter which turns the 1:2 macro into 1:1.
Quality is very good, even with the filter.

That explains it, the Pentax one does not come with such a filter.
