Craig, your only testing and interested at the 400mm end, so disregard
all the other stuff. Personally I think the front focus problem might
be what's causing the slow focus, so I would adjust the camera and try
to eliminate the error at 400mm f/5.6 ONLY the other apertures should
fall into place. You can zoom in on the camera LCD to see how things
are going and then check at 1:1 on the computer.

At the other end of the zoom you have a bigger depth of field so it
doesn't have to be spot on, hopefully it will be.

By saying to compare with another lens I didn't mean an expensive
lens the 18-55mm kit lens would do or a prime lens. The kit lens
is actually very good.

About to post some more tests with 3 different lenses and some really eye opening results.
