I've seen it recommended to use the rgb histogram, but honestly, when actually shooting I struggle to understand how it can be practical to respond to brightness information in any single colour channel. On the computer later, yes ok ....

Or if you get flustered just leave it centre weighted, record in RAW and fix it later. Works for me.
The mistake I made was running my shutter too fast for the prop planes. So I would go with shutter priority at somewhere near the 200 mark for them but MikeP is the owner of this little corner of the photographic universe. He'll probably tell you numbers for each plane haha

Agree, this is where it gets arty and you need to think of the final image. I'd tend to go too fast also thinking it was moving action I was trying to capture. Hi have a look at that glider pic I took on Sunday you can see the settings I was on.hope that gives you some idea.

In any case the sunny 16 rule will work.
I rarely use a meter in good light just check the
RGB histogram on test shot.... not the white one.
