Portraits ain't my thing, and I know next to nothing about lighting, poses etc., but from these pictures alone you look to be well up the learning curve already.
To be really picky, in the first one the softening effect at the corners protrudes too much onto the face for my liking, but that's just a matter of personal taste. In the second there's a slight bright area above her left eye and bright spot on the end of her nose that stand out a bit too much for me, although others might think otherwise and it might be my screen.
The back injury must be a pain in all respects, but good on you for grasping the opportunity it gives for doing something different.

I Like these Phil - I'm no expert when it comes to portraits, but in my opinion there are too many rules. A result that pleases you and your model is what's important, and these are pleasing
My advice would be to keep trying all sorts of angles, lighting, apertures, etc until you find styles that suit best. My best portraits are usually the simplest shots - often with softer, natural light, and usually with narrow depth of focus - a wide aperture helps here - perhaps a 50mm lens (on APS-C) would be a good starting point as an alternative lens that is not too costly.
You're keeping the background simple - that helps to not detract from your subject, your compositions are tight and your focus is on the eyes, and Ewa has a lovely natural (un-forced) smile so you're clearly learning fast - keep them coming

Thank you, Lenny. We are both on a learning curve. Ewa has not done this before and I have only done portraits of dogs. I have a 50mm 1.7 SMC M lens I will dig out.

Since injuring my back. I am unable to get out and take photos of landscapes and wildlife. So I have taken an interest in portraiture. Any tips. Advice or comments on how to improve are welcome. Ewa has kindly offered to be my model while on this learning curve. These were taken with the K3 and the Tamron 18/200. I hope to purchase a more professional lens soon.
