Epson 1400 printer

I have just discovered a previously unknown ability in my Epson 1400.

I've just printed off an A3 print ready for a camera club competition, I knew the dark magenta ink was low but decided to risk going ahead, of course halfway through the print my heart sank when the machine stopped and a big red cross appeared on the magenta on the ink monotor window

I then realised that unlike previous printers the 1400 had stopped the printing, other machines I've had have just churned out the print in a ghastly tint.

So I went through the cartridge changing process and let the printer do its own thing, it cleaned the heads and continued the print where it had left off I cant even tell where the join is

Has anyone else found this with other models or are you wasting ink by changing cartridges too early:
