Editing software

Since I was told about an hour ago - that I will be shooting in RAW soon [ eeeeeeek am I ready for this since the Kx isn't even in my paws yet ? ] can anyone tell me

1) what Editing software is on the CD that I will get with my new baby ?

2) what Editing Software do you actually find is best ?

Mate uses CaptureOne 5Pro and that's definitely far too much for me as yet.

So what have I been using till now - please don't laugh - just iPhoto - now it's iPhoto 09 version 8.1.

I've got to crack on and get semi organised - not only do I get the new camera on the Saturday , about an hour later I get a new laptop and I was told tonight that my first photos will be uploaded that evening !! Thank goodness the Kx can take photos automatically for me

The CD will contain a simple RAW converter which will be fine for starters. It is based on (but looks nothing like) the excellent Silkypix program that many of us swear by.

Don't be put off. When you start you will just want to correct any under or over exposure, perhaps adjust the colour balance if you were shooting indoors, maybe beef up the contrast a bit, and almost certainly sharpen the final picture.

To be honest, that's just about all I do after many years.

I found Lightroom to be the most user friendly of them all so far, although some would say another one is better so just try them all out.

The software that ships with the camera may not be the greatest ever but it gives perfectly acceptable results and it's free! I use it and I get on with it just fine

Apple's Aperture is worth the money if you want to spend, otherwise I'd stick with Iphoto.

Wacom tablets often come with a free copy of photoshop elements if you need a cheap imaging solution..

For RAW conversions I use either the free one that came with my K200D at home and at work I use RAWTherapee (its also free) and as George mentioned I do little more than fiddle with exposure, white balance and colours.

Anything else (croping, editing, straightening and sharpening) I do in photoshop.

I found Photoshop Elements more that adequate and whilst not free it was certainly cheap (iirc 50 or 60 quid) and very easy to use
