So would you expect the dealers to subsidise the private seller by them paying higher charges or are you saying it should be the other way around .. after all it is probably the businesses that are now keeping Ebay in profit.

Same price structure for all, but address the postage charges.
Stop making people pay others to take the items offered, let reasonable postage be charged, or set 'standard' rates, as in the books section.
It's no good having free listings for 99p items that cost £2 to send!
If retailers are in a separate section You'd know where to look for what, instead of getting confused by whether or not it's a dealer!

There is now a standard rates postage on mobile phones, great if you are selling a run of the mill handset but some I have sent out in the past weigh an absolute ton with all the manuals, cradle, cds etc and the max postage they have set will no way cover those by the signed for service you have to use to get insurance cover.

The cost of postage is a problem.
With people listing at 99p and charging £15 postage it's caused problems for all of us. Paypal don't get any revenue on the £15, so they make you put EVERYTHING on the start price!
I tried selling an item at 99p start with postage at £3 (65p for the envelope and £2.24 postal cost. They wouldn't let me, I had to give free delivery, so the start price went up to £3.99.
I didn't sell the item, had to pay 10p insertion fee and lost out. If it had sold the paypal cost would have been 10p+40p=50p, so I'd have made 49p profit, less than Ebay on my item!

It's not all one sided though as registering as a Sole Trader enables you to be employed and also be self employed as well. The self employed part enables the charging of costs against tax, in proportion to business use against personal use, so lighting, heating, telephones, broadband, petrol, etc. all get a share counted in.
I went on a very helpful HMRC course that explained clearly what needed to be done and what to claim for.
I hope they also explained that if you claim for the use of a room in your house it will be chargeable to capital gains tax when you sell the house. It's not all one sided though as registering as a Sole Trader enables you to be employed and also be self employed as well. Claiming for part of the mortgage then yes, but for utility bills there is no problem, you could run into problems if you claim for improvements to the fabric of the building as you would be adding value to it.

But..
..what would reputable dealers such as SRS or Canon outlet do?
