Durham - Cathedral and reflection

Just got back from a couple of days in the North East, had a nice wander around Durham and managed a couple of reflection shots

Great shot. Beautiful reflection

Lovely shots especially one and two. They bring back happy memories. I used to row a four out of the boat house in the middle of those two photos. Turning it around right next to the weir to get back in was always a bit hair raising. Durham Cathedral is my favourite building. Did you know that in the 19th century they were going to demolish the chapel at the west end to make a carriage way?

I'm a graphic designer and have used a shot, taken from a similar position as the top pic here, taken by a well known photographer...

Yours is better. Much more detail in the dark shadows etc...

Maybe that well known photographer should switch over to Pentax ;o)

Great colour with good shadow/highlight detail.

I love the series, especially the first one. The blue is superb, did you tweak it in pp ?

Thanks for the comments, I was very lucky with the weather...the following day was my "Tynemouth storm" shot so definitely no chance of reflections then...

pp wise the shot has had some contrast added aswell as the usual RAW edits, it was taken with a polariser hence the reasonably good colours

I go there regular and have only seen such a refelection as this once you have been lucky to choose such a day lovely shots.

Funny you should say that as I was wandering around the Durham indoor market where there's a stall selling photographs of the city/area and I was very suprised not to see a reflection shot like this, I thought it would be quite a common shot but maybe I was luckier than I thought ??

gets my vote too

The river needs to be dead calm Simon and with all that goes on in a river with wildlife and also the boat trips going up and down as well as the students rowing you dont often get the calm setting you need. There are also some nice shots to be had in the streets surounding the city plenty of nooks and cranies to get some nice street scenes hope you enjoyed your stay its a real nice place to visit.

I see what you mean Ian, the 1st 2 shots were taken from the the "launch area" for the Uni, fortunately they'd just packed away when I arrived..it is a nice City and I'd definitely visit again, bet it's a bit of a nightmare in summer though with all those tourists in such a small place

Very nice pictures of Durham Simon, I'm glad your trip to the North East was photographically rewarding. It's not that rare to get good reflections in this location but I say this as a Durham resident who can down to that spot any time. perhaps its the luck of the draw if you are a visitor and restricted in the time you can spend there.
I like to wander around with my camera in the nooks and crannies of Durham Phil refers to. It's only a small city but there is always something new to capture.
Would have been great to get a shot of Womble struggling to prevent his boat going over the weir.

PS I know quite a bit about the history of Durham Cathedral but I've learned something new from Womble. I never knew there was once a plan to demolish the Galilee chapel. It has some of the finest Norman architecture in the world.
