Thoughtful article; I hope that his feedback to the manufacturers has real influence.
On a more 'everyman' level, I had not appreciated that viewfinders have been discontinued on most digital compacts. By coincidence, the June issue of the consumers' magazine "Which?" has just come through my letterbox, and they are putting pressure on the manufacturers of P&S compacts to restore the optical viewfinder. Some of the articles and comments can be read on the Which? website. You don't have to be a member to see this page.
When I was deciding which compact to buy, for my first trial of digital photography in 2006, an optical viewfinder was one of the facilities that I considered essential.

To be honest, the optical viewfinders were so poor that I think the rear screens are now superior, at least as far as compact cameras go.
For the DSLR the Live View option is quite useful for some applications, but the pentaprism is best for general use.

Can I throw in my four penny worth.
As a wearer of varifolcal specs I find using my wifes Olympus compact camera almost impossible to use without tipping my head right back. My brother has a Sony with a rear screen - equally dificult to use for the same reason.
My K10D has a viewfinder (I know you know that) and is easy to use -only glitch is bright side lighting which causes abit of a problem.

A thought provoking read, but I'm glad our car hasn't got as many controls as my K5, I would need to be a multitasking woman to get anywhere.
