As you say David, Its never easy trying to photograph them in bright light as I have found out on many occasions. This photo has lent itself quite well to this effect and makes an interesting and unusual change.

I like it, but the only thing that spoils it for me is that the centre zone is too over busy I think. I'd be tempted to lower teh contrast a bit on the pipework under the side of the cab.

Thanks for the input folks. I'm not a fan of excessively manipulated pictures but I felt this actually improved the original. I just wondered what other people would think.
Jon: I may well try this treatment again in its own right and not as a remedy, just as you suggest.
Smeggy: It was the steam over the rear driving wheels that I thought was confusing rather than the pipework beneath the cab and there wasn't much i could do about that.

Yes I agree with you regards the steam it does look a bit strange in mono. But overall I really like the effect the mono and posterizing has had on it.

Awesome I agree. At first I thought I'd seen it before but what I think it reminds me of is the Art Deco titles from the start of Poirot.

Cliff: I've just uploaded this and the previous one of The Duke to PPG to see what happens.
Barrie: Art Deco is precisely what this is. The railways went through an Art Deco period of industrial design in the 1930s.

The light appeared good but it was a watery bright sun and the well polished paint of this massive steam loco, Duke of Gloucester at Newcastle, was giving off strange reflections. The colour photos were poor so I decided on some drastic treament by converting it to mono and then posterizing it.
