Down the Mine

One of my hobbies is exploring old mines. Now I am combining that with photography. Mind you, taking my brand new K20d and 16-50 down into the mud was rather worrying.

These are all taken on Bulb setting using a hand held flash off to the side and then various combinations of slave and hand fired flashes.

This first one is of a row of Ore Hoppers, cropped this one down to try and get it in the rule of thirds

Very good shots those. Just as well the K20 and DA* lenses are waterproof!

Best wishes, Kris.

Steve,

You've done a great job on the even lighting.

Great subject!

Thank you
It is quite difficult to compose the shot, because of course you can see nothing through the viewfinder, fortunately with DSLR's the preview screen allows you take a shot and view it, recompose and alter the lighting. It took rather a lot of attempts to get it right.

Now, that miner's lamp shows me that your lens has an 18 leaf iris?

This lens must have amazing bokeh?

All your attempts to get it right really paid off!

Great shots, I like the first one the best! Sounds like a fun hobby, I've always thought 'Urban Exploring' through old stormwater drains and railway tunnels sounded interesting too. And old abandoned buildings of course, tall tower cranes... You know, anywhere you're not supposed to actually be exploring..

Thanks for the comments, the next trip we are going to attempt to photograph a massive stoped out working, lighting that will be a challenge.

Incidentally, and going off on a bit of a tangent, below are 2 short videos of some other mine exploration we are doing. Nothing great but it may interest the odd person.

Cheers

PhotoMe doesn't show the lens data except that it was shot at 16mm. That leads me to think that the lens used was the one stated in the original post, the DA*16-50mm, which has a 9 leaf iris.
