this is a fairly new phenomenon on ebay - the fantastically overpriced item. We were discussing it at work the other day. I think that they must be out of stock and change the price rather than delisting and paying a new listing few when they have stock again. Any other suggestions?

That's exactly what I do when I have sold a BIN item elsewhere. Simpler and quicker than ending an auction early.
