Does your camera have any stuck pixels?

Hi Pentax Pixel Peepers!

After shooting RAW exclusively for some time (and using Silkypix that virtually eliminates the problem automatically), I was alarmed to find stuck pixels when I tried some JPEGs again.

I'm interested to know how common this is - particularly with the *ist DS model, but with other models as well - particularly because I am hoping to sell my camera. I don't want to put anyone off, but neither do I want to be dishonest by not mentioning it in the advert if I should.

I understand that it's something that can happen with all digital cameras, and more likely to happen the older or more used they are - but to know just how common it is with Pentaxes would be useful.

Please Google for more info on stuck pixels if you are not familiar with the subject. (Stuck/hot/dead pixels can also refer to LCD screens, but I'm talking about sensors).

Note that hot pixels are slightly different in that they are temporary and can be gone when you use the camera again after it has cooled down. Stuck pixels are permanent.

I would be greatful if you could vote in the poll. If you have a DS and another model too, please just answer for your DS.

There is no "Don't Know" option in the poll. If you don't know, please either don't vote or test your camera for the problem. Stuck or hot pixels show up as bright tiny points of light against a dark background. Note that long exposures may introduce noise that complicates the issue. So I think it's best to test by taking "normal" photos with some dark areas in the background - or a not-too-long exposure in the dark or with lens cap on then pump up the levels on the computer to examine.

Any other comments or advice would be interesting as well. Thanks very much.

We haven't noticed the problem yet on the *istDS or the K10D. The pixel mapping of the K20D should solve any problem, but that's for the next upgrade.

A few stuck pixels should be quite easy to clone out. Not ideal, but eventually it may be inevitable.

After 2 years, not a problem for me... yet

I've never noticed any hot or stuck pixels on my K10D shooting RAW or JPEG anywhere in the ISO range or with long exposures.

My *ist DL2 has 2 or 3 permanently stuck on pixels, not enough to cause trouble and TBH they are rarely even visible.

My K10D has none that I know about, and I don't look for them because once I spot them they'll annoy me.
you don't have to be mad to post here

but it does help

Thanks all for the replies and votes.

I don't mind if the thread is now unstuck or de-stickified. Cheers.

I have owned two *Ist Ds, and two K10Ds, and have only seen one stuck pixel on one camera.

There is a stuck pixel on the lcd of my K10, but not on the photos. And it seems to only show up once in a while and then disappear for a week or two. Obviously, it doesn't bother me too much.

K100D: no stuck pixels, one small hot phenomenon. There's a little purple plus shape that appears after long exposures.

Hot or stuck sub pixels tend to appear as "+" shapes. I'm not sure why.

Maybe that's what happens when you sharpen it.

I have an ist D with two stuck pixels, but as I almost always use RAW, they hardly show up...

It's also quite easily corrected.

*istDS No stuck pixels
K10D No stuck pixels

at least not that I've ever noticed, but then I don't go hunting for them.

I always use RAW and haven't noticed any on my DS. I bought the DS the month ot came out so it's now over 3 years old so it's not doing too bad.

The internal battery has however died so every time I changed batteries I have to reset the clock which is a pain. Does anyone know how to replace it ?

I have a bright green stuck pixel in the middle of my pictures. Get a lot more purple ones when I shoot at higher ISOs or do longer exposures.

I find it to be a total pain due to its location. Shows up in both Raw and JPEG, camera is an istDS.
