Adobe do a DNG converter. Have a Google.
Check your camera settings too - I'm not sure how your camera can change from taking DNG to PEF without you realising it.

Or perhaps its a Windows default programme issue. Is there another programme set to open DNG's - if Pentax Digital Camera Utility was installed for example it might take the defaults over and change the icons ? Right click on a 'PEF', choose properties then use the Default button to browse to the program you want to open them with.
Are you sure that the actual file extension has changed, or is it just the icons?

You can select in the menus whether RAW means DNG or PEF. Maybe you have changed it or restored factory defaults.
In any event, files of one type don't change into files of another type without some input from ourselves.

I understood he was saying that the DNGs on his computer had 'turned into PEF's', not that the camera had started to shoot PEF's?? iangilmore, can you clarify this please.

Photoshop can open PEF files in camera raw. You need to download the latest camera raw. Unless you are using a very old PS version.

Solved!! Thank you all for your help, especially John Riley and Gwyn.
The RAW files were coming from my camera as PEF files. (Didn't know they could be changed in the menus). I must have done this myself without knowing! Seem to remember keeping tight hold of my camera in a crowd of people and my settings had altered. Thought I'd righted them but didn't have my spectacles on.
Best wishes
Ian
