Displaying images on a TFT screen of 1024x768

Please can someone clarify something for me. What I state below is my understanding - please enlighten me if any of it is tosh.

I have a 15" 1024x768 TFT monitor.
I understand that these monitors (because they are not scanning like CRT screens) can only show their native mode accurately. This is because they are literally made up of 1024 x 768 pixels.

So any picture made up of more than 1024x768 will be compressed into 1024x768.

For displaying pics on a 1024x768 screen, would not the best results come from using the best resolution (*** in ist-D talk), and a size set to just within the size of the screen (960x640)?

I know that, for printing, L*** is best. So I shall probably take most of my shots at this setting in case I need to print. But sometimes, If I'm experimenting, I know I'll only be looking at the pics via the screen. Should I be using the 960x640*** for the best results?

Many thanks, Dave

I hope I've understood your question correctly, but here goes...

If you might print an image, then there could be a case for taking all your pictures at the best resolution the camera can produce.

This is a separate issue from the monitor resolution, which should also be set at the best quality you can. It is also true that CRT monitors will give better quality images than TFT screens. For Photoshop purposes, the colour of the CRT will also be far more accurate. And at a fraction of the price for a given quality level.

I am using a 19" IIyama CRT with a 0.22mm dot pitch and the computer is set at 32 bit colour and 1280 x 1024 resolution. This is the recommended best resolution for this monitor, although it can go to 1600 x 1200. Fortunately, what we see on the screen translates pretty well to what we get on the print.

The fact is, that for image quality, especially if you plan to print, you need to go for the highest image size the camera will allow, and (with a decent camera) this will invariably be much more than the monitor's highest resolution, let alone its best.

The solution is to let your viewing software reduce the image to fit the screen resolution. Irfanview does this well, and it's free and highly recommended.

You can also, if you wish, use Irfanview to make smaller copies of your pictures at screen resolution size, for convenience.
