Discussion: Weekly Competition #8: Reflection

It was taken a couple of years ago. What makes it look old? Well I suppose Tri-X, which must have been around as a film for at least 40 years, might give a 'period' look and the silhouetted man might be wearing a hat. The scene is a reflection in a shop window which is the plane with the vertical ribbons at 45 degrees to the camera. A very bright low winter sun gave an exposure of around 1/500 at f16 I think.

Hi Ken,

Yes the silhouette of the man walking as well as the old street lamp and the deteriorated street itself. Not to mention the deep blacks throughout the photo, mostly caused by the suns position no doubt. Thanks for the technical data, it seems the (near) sunny 16 rule proved itself yet again, if in fact you did rate said Tri-x at its 'box' speed.

Box speed indeed, 400ASA in D76 for 10.5 minutes. Deteriorated streets and old street lamps are part of everyday life here! In fact just one block away from where I took the pic a movie was shot set in Eastern Europe in the 1960's. The recent Sony Bravia TV ad was shot here in Glasgow in Iron Curtain style tower blocks. Well worth a look:

This is live action and no computer graphics, the clean up took weeks and the houses were demolished!

Are you referring to the paint ad or the ball one, either way both are amazing. Though it seems a huge waste of resources, but the skys the limit when marketing a sleek new television is needed right? Also those balls look mighty computery.

Just been looking through the entries - there are so many great ones on there that I'm finding myself being extra critical to seperate them out.

Don't let it put you off, but also don't be surprised if I say something like 'This would have won it if the parrot in the background wasn't blinking'. **

Keep posting them, I've got all day monday...

Dan

** Don't bother looking for a blinking parrot, I was being hypothetical.

I think Lilly's pic is brilliant, deserves the gold medal.
