I use the DA*16-50 and the DA*50-135 and have no problem with autofocus with mine but that doesn't mean you don't have a problem with yours though.

The DA*50-135 certainly isn't a fast lens but i don't see why that would be a problem with concerts.
The lens is designed for portraits so it has quite a focus throw so you can easily manual focus.
The AF on the lens does lock on very well, maybe because it moves not that fast?

The da 50-135mm is a slow to focus lens. However compared to screw drive after 70-200mm lenses it doesn't hunt anywhere near as much. It also locks on quicker so quick focus is not the be all and end all.
I meet a lot of concert photographers in all photo pits from local pubs to Glastonbury fedtival whenever I have had focussing issues the Canon guys usually do to. I never hear complaints from Nikon users. If I was to go full frame which I wouldn't considering how good the K-5 is I would plump for a d700 and some Nikon glass.
You are welcome to look through my Flickr stream to see what this great lens can do on an old Samsung gx20 which is a really slow focus body compared to the k-5.

Yes it is. I have one. My 'big heavy' lens is a 135-400 Sigma ( which I love the IQ off upto 350mm ) focusses much quicker than my DA*50-135, even though there seems to be much more glass to shit about.Thanks, that is good to know. (I only use the center focus point anyway.

The 50-135 is a stunning quality lens though. I don't think it would be too slow for snapping peeps on stage though.
I have had some fights with the SR with my K-5s. it takes a while to kick in and I've had some ghosting images occasional, even on fast shutter speeds. I leave it off now unless I'm deliberately shooting at slow shutters and have time to let it settle

Mmm - odd. I've had no issues with using a Tamron 70-200mm on my K-5. In fact, after trying other lenses [inc. Sigma 70-200 - too heavy and Sigma 50-150 - too short] it's my lens of choice. Having said that, it may be that I'm using it in different situations where it performs better. My previous camera was a Nikon D300s which has class leading AF especially when used with AF-S lenses, and I've used other brands in the past too, so I'm able to give an opinion based on actual usage. Whilst the K-5 can't quite match the Nikon in terms of speed, it's still pretty quick and accurate. I almost always use centre point and rarely have hunting or non focussing issues - except in situations where any camera might struggle. The Tamron performs well in Pentax mount - on a Nikon it's really slooooow!

OK, I'd like to take back all of the cuss words I previously directed at the K-5 I purchased for work. I updated the firmware from 1.01 to 1.11 and BAM. No problems focusing anymore. I can honestly say I'm considering the combo for myself now!!

On a side note....I've heard mixed reviews. Is the 50-135 better than the tamron 70-200? I've heard the CA is high on the 50-135 wide open compared to the tamron.
