Digital photo frames- novelty or good?

I dislike lots of photographs of people displayed around my house so I did buy a digital frame quite a few years ago and it is usually on. I don't sit and watch it like a slide show but I quite like the fact that it is ever changing.
I got one for my mother a couple of years back. She's 84 and lives alone and with a lot of scans of old prints (restored as necessary) along with around 700 newish digital photos it is one of the things that gives her the most pleasure. It's updated, usually with photos of her grand children and great grand children, every few months.
The biggest drawback, I find, is because the frame is in landscape format photos in portrait format are small and of course vice versa if the frame is turned.

I have had two bought me over the years but have never used them.
However after reading this thread, once we have finished our new TVless sitting room (the room jusy for me and Mrs A) I think I will be getting them out!

My wife has a 3" digital frame that she carries in her hand bag. It enables her to show off snaps of our grand children without having a paper folder full of snaps.
Incidentally 3" appears to be the biggest you can get that has its own internal battery, above that they all appear to be mains/transformer powered.
The iPad has the function, if only you could transfer the pictures to it properly.
regards
Bernard

You can synch a folder on your computer with your iPad. Alternatively, you can buy the camera connection kit, basically an SD card reader. That's only happy accepting images straight from the camera. It doesn't seem to like adjusted JPEGs images that have been put on a card. The iPad has the function, if only you could transfer the pictures to it properly.
Hope that helps!
Best regards, John

Bernard I really do wish you would read the numerous posts I've written trying to help you with your iPad! My wife has a 3" digital frame that she carries in her hand bag. It enables her to show off snaps of our grand children without having a paper folder full of snaps.

My parents have one (81 and 75 yrs old) and since they have zero technical ability, and computers and tablets remain as alien as hieroglyphics, they are delighted with the one I bought them as they can use it to show their friends photos they took, on something larger than the 1.5' screen on the back of their ancient P&S, just by popping the SD card in it !
iPad - iTunes on your PC and a folder on the PC for pics to be transfered to the iPad. just add pics to the iPad as required via iTunes. Thee are even apps to sort files (pics into new folders if you so desire).
