Digital lens converter?

Perhaps a dumb question, but since 1.4x, 2x and even 3x conveters are used for increasing the focal length of lenses, isn't it possible to make a 0.6 times converter, to adapt film lenses to the same focal length equivalent for digital cameras? Whilst they're at it, they could also coat the rear element specially to compensate for the high reflectivity sensor. Then, we would have an acceptable means of addressing the problems which digital cameras have introduced in using existing lenses. Maybe not the perfect answer, but a good interim solution.

I suppose, the reason is that it would detract from the appeal of the new Digital optimised lenses for APS sensors. It also means that the lens system would be heavier than the equivalent film lens, rather than lighter and smaller.

Oh well, unlikely to happen I guess.

Such things already exist, and have done since the days of the Twin lens reflex. On of the early ones is the Zeiss Mutar which in its wide angle form converts a Rolleiflex to a moderate wide angle. It is a front of lens converter, just like the one provided for the FujiFilm Finepix cameras.

Front coverters are usually fish eye ones for 35mm SLRs, converting wide angles into fish-eye lenses.

However, the downside is the bulk (A Zeiss Mutar is huge and heavy and expensive) and the results are only moderately good.

I think it's probably easier to make a nice new 12=24mm zoom!
