Digital equivalent of slides?

I'm a long term Pentax user (ME Super, then MZ-5n) thinking of moving to digital. Thing is, I've always taken slides (mostly landscapes), but is there a digital equivalent?

Looking at digital projectors advertised, 1024x768 pixels looks typical and 1920x1080 high end, but these seem determined by video specs and look inadequate to reproduce the detail from a (good) 6+ megapixel camera. So:

- Are there digital projectors (at reasonable prices) which can deliver the same quality as traditional 35mm transparencies?

- Typically I would project to say 1.5m x 1m. Prints this big would benefit from the extra resolution of something like a K10D, but would this be pointless if projecting to a lower resolution?

In terms of resolution, slides will beat digital images every time. However, if you project slides against a digital projector, the digital images appear to be brighter, sharper, punchier in every respect. And that's at the relatively low resolution of 1024 x 768.

Of course it's an illusion to some degree, but a very effective one and we had to abandon any ideas of showing slides and digital projection side by side. The slides looked awful.

So I wouldn't worry about it - if you want to project digitally just get the best quality projector that you can. It'll look great.
